My House by Erin (grade 3)

I live in an apartment building with my family in Zhonghe. There are four bedrooms, a small living room, a kitchen, a small bathroom and a study in my house. My parents’ bedroom is the biggest, my brother’s is small and mine is the smallest. The living room and the study are my favorite rooms in my house because I like to watch TV, chat, read books and play computer games with my family there.

An Unhappy Experience by Amanda (grade 6)

A week ago, I was playing ball in the living room with my younger sister. I was too excited playing with her then. We were running around in the living room and throwing the ball to each other. Suddenly, I heard a crash. Oh! I broke my mother's favorite vase. Mother would be angry and punish me. Then, I saw Mother opened the door and noticed the broken vase. She was angry and asked me what happened. I was so afraid, but I was still brave enough to tell Mother the truth. I also said to Mother,"I will buy a new vase for you." This is my unhappy experience.

A makeup story by Kim (grade 10)

I am a mouse, and I used to live in a messy house, which two cats live in. The house is decorated with a lot of garbage. I lived there with my clan. I always romped and played games with my brothers and sisters. I gnawed everything in the house, so the cats decided to clean the house. After they budged the shelf, they found a small hole. “Who dug up this hole,” they muttered. And they started to search for the answer. Later, they noticed that everything in the house was gnawed by the mice. And they looked around. ”Wait a moment,” shouted a cat, “there is a mouse covered up by cheese.” The cats growled at the mouse. “Oh, my goodness” said the mouse. The mouse trotted away nimble and yelled, “We are discovered by the cats”. Suddenly, the cats appeared behind us. They tramped to besiege us. “You can’t run away,” they laughed and said. We all exclaimed. We started to run. We dashed each other. And the cats grabbed some of my brothers and sisters. We panted after we ran out of the house. It dejected us because we missed a lot of members in the clan. But we couldn’t stop. We had to find another place to live or we would face other danger in life. The next morning, we lined up and started to look for a place for us. After a long time, we found a cave, where a kind bear lived. We demanded him for a life. “Ok, no problem” he said. And he walked out of the cave to find something to eat. He came back and dragged with him some meat. He flopped down and chatted with us happily. “You can live here if you don’t mind” he suggested. “Hurray” we yelled. We dressed up and had a big party with the bear. And we had a happy time living with the bear.

Movie Review by Peggy (grade 12)

The story, Ratatouille, begins in Paris. A little mouse, Remy, who loves cooking because of Chef Gusteau’s saying --- anyone can cook. After leaving his home, Remy arrives at Gusteau’s restaurant. At first, he wants to leave there, but he does not after finding out Linguini needs a job and the help from him. Remy controls Linguini’s actions by pulling Linguini’s hair to cook. Moreover, Remy accidentally finds the papers which prove Linguini is Gusteau’s son in Chef Skinner’s office.

One night, the famous critic, Anton Ego, whose bad review kills Gusteau, comes to the restaurant Remy, Colette, and the rat clan cook together. After eating Ratatouille, Ego goes back to his childhood and remembers how much he enjoys this dish. Although Linguini and Remy have a big argument in the middle of the story, they run a bistro, Ratatouille, in the end.

A letter from the past by Peggy (grade 12)

Dear Future Me, January 27, 2008

I am working hard on my assignments for this winter break which include English, Chinese, math, history, and social studies. Although I have quite a few assignments now, you must be busier. On account of the essential exams, you have to study harder than before. At the desk sit a tired examinee studying so hard until very late at night. Don’t feel discouraged and never give up.

Do you remember that the second album of my favorite singers I have bought recently? I am listening to it now. Do you still do it? Above all, remember to study and take care of yourself. Getting ill is extremely uncomfortable before the important time. All I can do is to encourage you in this letter. If facing some difficulties, you should not hesitate to go on.

Sincerely yours,

Peggy

My Friend by Gary (grade 8)

What is a friend? A friend is someone who can listen to you and talk to you, who can have fun with you, and who can help you when you are in difficult times. A true friend will come and listen to you to make your feel better when you are not happy or worried about something.

Many people have told me that I am a clever, easygoing person. As I think everyone is a unique person to me and I treat everyone equally, they like to make friends with me. Therefore, I have many friends. Even though some of them might not be the so-called good students in school, they are friends of mine.

One of my best friends is Sam. He is a nice and interesting friend to me. He’s not very tall. He has big brown eyes with a small mouth and short hair. His skin is dark. In our free time, we always play ball and go hiking together. His favorite ball game is baseball, and he plays it very well. He likes to do outdoor activities a lot, so he always says “Yes” whenever he is invited to play ball. He seldom gets angry! When you play tricks on him, he just smiles at you. He is the best person I have ever met, and I hope that he will be my best friend forever.

Why We Learn English by Tina (grade 7)

Chinese, French, Spanish and English.... there are hundreds of languages all over the world, but why we are studying English instead of the others? There are lots of answers and reasons. I think one of the reasons is that English is a commonly used language; you can use this language in lots of countries. When you need help from others in a foreign country, you might need a commonly used language---English. Our parents send us to language schools to learn English because they hope that we can learn English quickly and well so as to increase our skill of social contact. Speaking English is really helpful for you and me. It makes your life more convenient and more meaningful. Try to learn English well!!!

My favorite sport by Chester (grade 11)

If you want to get fit, it goes without saying that you need exercise. You can go jogging, play ball, swim or do push-ups. Whatever you do, you can maintain a healthy body as long as you sweat after exercising.

My favorite sport is basketball. I have started playing it since I studied in elementary school. But the time I really got into it was in my junior-high-school days when I rushed to the court immediately upon hearing the bell. There have been several people asking me why I love basketball so much. Actually until now, I don’t know, either. Maybe it is because the only fun place for me to go in my neighborhood is the basketball court.
